Germany christmas tour

Day 1: Wednesday Frankfurt - Erfurt - Leipzig (B/D)
Depart from Frankfurt in the morning and drive eastward to our first stop Eisenach, dominated by the Wartburg Castle. Visit one of Germanys most important edifices of national heritage and see the room, where Luther used to live for many years and spent the last years of his seclusion.Continue via Weimar to Leipzig, where, after checking in to your hotel we will visit one of Germanys largest Christmas markets. The main attractions are located on the historical market square in front of the ancient town hall. Marvel at the 25 yard Christmas tree with its thousands of lights or stroll through the many stalls with handcrafted Christmas gifts from the region. We invite you to a very informal German style snack with Bratwurst and mulled wine at one of the numerous food stalls. Overnight at Hotel Mercure or similar.

Day 2: Thursday Leipzig - Meißen - Dresden (B)
In the morning we continue towards Meissen, where we visit one of Germany’s oldest porcelain manufactories. Founded in the 18th century and being continuously in operation since then, the delicate, always handcrafted products are found in royal courts and celebrities homes all around the world. Meissen is proud to be able to restore or remanufacture on demand all ever produced designs, as the negative plaster models have been preserved through-out the centuries. See the exhibition hall and the demonstration workshops were all steps of the painting and glazing process is explained to you. Afterwards we continue onward to Dresden, were after a city tour, highlighting all major sights as Zwinger, Frauenkirche, Semper Opera House and many more we check in to our hotel. In the evening we will visit the Christmas market in Dresden, which is named “Striezelmarkt” after the local cake speciality, the “Christstollen” or “Striezel” Highlights are the more than 16-yard tall Christmas pyramid, and the many stalls, where you can sample the “Strietzel”. Overnight at Hotel Achat or similar.

Day 3: Friday Dresden - Annaberg - Schneeberg - Plauen (B/D)
Today after breakfast we are heading mostly along country roads to visit two ancient miner-villages, named Schneeberg and Annaberg. These villages are typical for the Erzgebirge (ore-mountains) and actually are the home of the German tradition of woodcarving and Christmas-pyramids. In older times, light – represented by candles - was an important symbol of life and safety for the miners, working in the dark tunnels to retrieve the ore and coal. Thus the woodcarvers combined their deep religious beliefs and used candles to illuminate the pyramids with saints and symbols from the holy night like ox, mule and shepard. The Christmas market in Annaberg is dating back as far as 1510. In Schneeberg, the main attraction, aside of the Christmas market is St. Wolfgang-church with an altar from 1539, carved by Lucas Cranach, the elder. In the afternoon we continue towards Plauen, a city famous for its handcrafted lace. Plauen was founded in the 11th century and since the 16 hundreds an important place for cotton manufacturing. Overnight at Hotel Alexandra or similar.

Day 4: Saturday Plauen - Bamberg - Frankfurt (B)
Travel through the Franconian forest to the imperial city of Bamberg. The city, founded in the 09th century also has a nicely preserved old-town which was declared UNESCO world heritage site a couple of years ago. We will walk through the old town and see the cathedral and the St. Benedicts abbey Michaelsberg. The  impressions of German Christmas markets can be seen as the pedestrian zone around the cathedral hosts the Bamberg Christmas market and you can do some last – minute shopping there, if you wish. On we go through rolling hills of Franconia until reaching Fankfurt in the late afternoon. Overnight at Hotel Hamburger hof or similar.

Day 5: Sunday Frankfurt - Heidelberg - Black Forest(D)

Depart from Frankfurt in the morning and drive to Heidelberg for a walking tour of the old university town. Our next stop is at the famous and one of the most beautiful Spa resorts - Baden- Baden. In the afternoon continue to the Black Forest, home of the cuckoo clocks. Dinner and overnight at Hofgut Sternen in Breitnau or similar.

Day 6: Monday Black Forest - Lindau / Lake Constance - Neuschwanstein Castle / Füssen (B)
After breakfast depart for Lake Constance. Enjoy a walking tour in the picturesque island town of Lindau. Move into the Allgäu, viewing the fantastic Bavarian Alps. In Hohenschwangau we visit the fairy tale castle of King Ludwig II, the Neuschwanstein Castle. Overnight at Treff Hotel Luitpoldpark or similar.

Day 7: Tuesday Fuessen - Oberammergau - Ettal - Munich (B)
This morning we drive to Oberammergau, home of the famous Passion Play which takes place every 10 years. Stop at the Benedictine Monastery of Ettal. On to Munich. Enjoy an extensive city tour ending at the romantic Christmas Market. Enjoy some time of exploring and shopping. Overnight at hotel Tryp or similar.

Day 8: Wednesday Munich - Salzburg - Munich (B)
Today enjoy our full day excursion to the city where the famous composer Mozart was born – Salzburg. After a walking tour through the old town, to get familiar with all the important sights like the Mozarthouse, the cathedral, the Getreidegasse and many more, you will have enough time to spend on your own, strolling around, visit the beautiful Christmas Market and of course you will have to taste the most famous sweets made in Salzburg the Mozartkugeln. In the late afternoon return to Munich.

Day 9: Thursday Munich - Rothenburg - Bad Windsheim (B)
After breakfast drive along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg with some stops at along the road. On a city walk you get to know the charming small medieval town. See the famous church Jakobskirche with an altar by the woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider and enjoy the Christmas Market. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the worlds famous Christmas shop. In the afternoon we continue to Bad Windsheim. Overnight at Hotel Reichsstadt or similar.

Day 10: Friday Bad Windsheim - Nuremberg - Bad Windsheim (B/D)
Today join a visit to the "Christkindl Market", probably the most famous Christmas Market of the world in the historic city of Nuremberg. On a city walk you see the main sights such as the home of the artist Dürer. Visit the medieval Kaiserburg Castle before you have the rest of the day free for the Christmas Market and for shopping. In the late afternoon we return to Bad Windsheim , where you will enjoy a Christmas dinner and a little Christmas gift.

Day 11: Saturday Bad Windsheim - Wuerzburg - Frankfurt (B)
In the morning we leave for Wuerzburg. Enjoy a tour of the magnificent Residence, a master-piece of German baroque architecture and a last visit to a German Christmas Market. Arrival in Frankfurt in the afternoon.
